Dicksonia antarctica has a fascinating history in the UK. Originally brought over from Australasia, the Australian tree fern became popular with botanists and horticulturists and has since become a much-loved feature of British gardens.
Where ours come from
Today Dicksonia antarctica are sourced as a by-product of the logging industry. Before timber is harvested, we carefully remove suitable tree ferns that would otherwise be lost during the process. This allows us to give these mature specimens a new life in gardens and landscapes around the world.
All our tree ferns are harvested under strict licensing and in accordance with the relevant regulations, ensuring they are responsibly and legally sourced.
For us, responsible sourcing is an important part of what makes our tree ferns special. Our Dicksonia antarctica are harvested legally and responsibly as part of authorised forestry operations. By carefully removing the ferns before the timber is harvested, we can give these mature plants a new life rather than seeing them lost during the logging process.
Care
Tree ferns love moisture and naturally grow beneath the forest canopy, so they thrive in similar conditions in the garden. Ideally, plant them in partial or dappled shade, sheltered from strong winds and direct afternoon sun.
Plant in rich, organic soil and add plenty of natural bark or leaf mulch around the base to help retain moisture. For best results, use a diluted seaweed fertiliser in the crown 2–3 times a month during spring and summer.
Pricing & delivery
Our tree ferns are priced according to their height, with larger multi-stemmed and naturally shaped, angular trunks available as individual specimens.
We offer delivery within a 10-mile radius of London, with longer-distance delivery available by request. Alternatively, we recommend collecting directly from our nursery at Leahurst Nurseries or visiting us at Columbia Road Flower Market every Sunday, where a selection of our tree ferns is available.
