Materials and care

Light: Requires full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily).
Soil type: Thrives in poor, sandy, gravelly, or chalky soils; excellent drainage is essential to prevent winter root rot.
Watering: Water regularly until established, then only during prolonged dry spells.
Deadheading: Cut back faded flower heads promptly to encourage a second flush of blooms.
End of season: Leave dried seed heads for winter texture, then cut back to the ground in early spring.
Fertiliser: Do not fertilise — rich soil reduces flowering and spoils the plant's form.
Division: Lift and divide every 3 years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour.
